Careers in Sport and Leisure

Are you passionate about a sport or leisure hobby you pursue? Enthusiastic about getting stuck in and getting others involved too? Are you dedicated and determined? Well, now could be an excellent time to get involved in the sports and leisure industry. With lots of investment planned by the government and employers, in response to the 2012 Olympics, the sports and leisure industry is looking more appealing than ever.

People work hard in their daily jobs, and need to be able to fully relax and enjoy their time off. Whether you are a chef working in a top restaurant, or a dive guide showing them the delights of the underwater world on their overseas holiday, you will be in a career that helps people to re-energise and re-discover what is important in life.

Being physically fit keeps disease and serious health problems at bay. Participating regularly in physical activity raises our spirits, floods our bodies with endorphins, and helps us to see the positive side of life. Getting active helps us to focus mentally and achieve more in our jobs. It builds confidence, team skills and staying power that translates into all other areas of our life! How wonderful to follow a career that encourages and helps people to participate in sports at a level that suits them!

Don’t be fooled though, it can be tough. In many of the roles you will be expected to work long hours and weekends. Many of the jobs are not highly paid, but the rewards can be fantastic. You are performing a vital role in helping people enjoy life, and keep healthy.

To work in this industry there are some common skills and traits that are important, including excellent communication, a positive and helpful attitude, organisation and teamwork. The qualifications and training needed are as varied as the jobs. Explore these job areas below and find the right role for you. An event such as the national Career in Sport + Leisure careers event can be useful in finding out more and networking with people in the industry.
