Careers in the Armed Forces

Do you crave a career that is beyond the ordinary? Do you want to travel the world, and see places you might not otherwise visit whilst gaining recognised qualifications? Are you cool under pressure? There are such a variety of roles in the armed forces that you should be able to find something that matches your abilities and interests.

The Armed Forces in the UK are The British Army, The Royal Navy and the Royal Air Force (RAF). You might just associate the armed forces with soldiers, marines and pilots, but the diversity of support staff required ensures the Armed Forces is one of the most vibrant and fascinating of employers with an incredible spectrum of choice. Although all candidates are required to receive a level of training in combat and fighting areas, as well as a required level of fitness, only a proportion will have combat roles.

Common sense, confidence and communication skills are essential, and they particularly want people who think quickly, read situations accurately and work well within a team.

Entry requirements depend on the level of entry. It is possible to join up in a junior rank with no educational qualifications, but some roles require A-levels or a degree for entry. The training, skills and professionalism you will gain are highly valued by commercial and public sector employers should you wish to spend only a part of your career in the armed forces.

The MOD has information about careers in all the armed forces.
